Role: System Administrator (Interim)
Rijkswaterstaat is the executive agency of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, responsible for the design, construction, management, and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in the Netherlands—including waterways, roads, and water systems. The IT environment supports mission-critical applications for navigation and infrastructure management, running on VMware-virtualized Windows Server environments.
During my assignment, I was responsible for:
- Managing, implementing, and monitoring business-critical applications for navigation and infrastructure, primarily on VMware ESX 4.0 and Windows Server 2008 R2
- Participating in the selection and rapid rollout of a pilot project introducing tablet PCs for road inspectors—successfully executed under significant political pressure
- Monitoring performance and availability using SCOM 2007 and Nagios
- Providing 2nd and 3rd line support to road inspectors
- Delivering new workstations and network infrastructure on ships and at locks
- Documenting and inventorying IT infrastructure on vessels and waterway facilities
