Servicepunt71 was the shared service center for the municipalities of Leiden, Leiderdorp, Zoeterwoude, and Oegstgeest, delivering support in IT, HR, finance, legal, procurement, and facilities management. Their IT infrastructure included around 300 Windows Server 2008 machines virtualized on approximately 30 VMware ESX 4.1 hosts, with backups managed via Tivoli Storage Manager. The monitoring team was partially based in Indonesia, requiring regular international coordination.
Key responsibilities:
- Monitoring and maintaining performance/availability for Windows Server, Exchange 2010, and VMware infrastructure, including working with the offshore monitoring team (English communication)
- Handling daily operational tasks, such as changing backup tapes
- Providing 3rd line support to application and functional administrators for Windows Server, Exchange, and VMware
- Automating routine Active Directory and Exchange changes using PowerShell scripts
- Deploying and configuring new Windows servers on VMware ESX
- Developing and coordinating patch schedules for all VMware ESX hosts, ensuring updates were applied with zero service disruption
